I have the pleasure of teaching 6th Grade students Social Studies, with a focus on Ancient Civilizations, in a public middle school in Stamford, Connecticut. Our school, just like our city, is an ethnic and socioeconomic melting pot. Our student body is highly diverse, with a significant number of Bilingual and English Language Learners, as well as a large percentage of students receiving free and reduced lunch. This diversity only serves to enrich our Social Studies experience here in 6th grade. This year we have been fortunate enough in 6th grade to pilot the use of a brand new Social Studies textbook, which utilizes a comprehensive online component, in addition to our typical hard copy materials. In order to benefit from the extensive resources available through the TCI program, my students need regular access to reliable and up to date technology.
