My students have been apart since being sent home on March 13th due to COVID-19. This will be a first day of school unlike any in history, so these fourth graders will need time to reconnect and learn about each other. We'll read the books from this project and engage in meaningful discussions about race, diversity, and inclusiveness and then we'll embark on a project in which students will need to communicate and work together while discovering their own strengths and those of their peers. With voice and choice, students will decide which aspect of the gardening project best suits their interests. We will have a research team that will decide which plants best suit our location and then the planting team will make sure it's all planted properly. The art team will discuss and decide on our inclusive theme and then they will decorate the planters and make signs. I'll incorporate science lessons about the growth cycle and weather as well as social and emotional lessons about inclusion, respect, and empathy. By the end, these fourth graders will have collaborated to create an edible garden, used their artistic talent to decorate planters and signs that promote inclusiveness, and will know each other better after reading these books and engaging in thoughtful discussions.
