Traditional classroom seating is outdated. As Educators, we strive to encourage "outside the box" thinking, yet continue to implement the archaic arrangement of perfectly straight rows, with each student confined to his or her designated desk. How can we expect our students to maintain engagement in an environment that does not allow them the freedom to decide how and where they would learn best?
Flexible seating creates opportunities for students to set themselves up for success. Students who are comfortable are more engaged and willing to participate in class activities. Providing various seating options allows students to experience a sense of control over their learning while working independently, as well as collaborating with peers. The ability to physically move around the classroom contributes to sensory regulation, which is a key factor in focus and attention.
My students with disabilities would especially benefit from the flexibility to change the type or location of their seat, as their needs change on a day-to-day, sometimes minute-to-minute, basis. All students deserve to learn in a classroom that accommodates and celebrates their individual learning needs.
