My students have been diagnosed with severe social/emotional disabilities and, in a therapeutic public high school, receive intensive, individualized mental health services to assist them in achieving emotional stability and academic success. I strive to to create an educational environment that supports and encourages the academic and social development of my students and to provide them with skills to facilitate a successful transition back to their home school. Academically, I have been able to make cross curricular connections between World Civilization and Reading classes by using primary source documents to promote critical thinking and inquiry-based learning. I recently had an opportunity to attend a program at DePaul University, funded by a grant from the Library of Congress, to gain additional strategies for using primary sources to help students engage in learning.
