In order to meet the needs of all learners, the majority of our math class is spent in small groups. One group meets with me for their instruction while other groups work independently, with partners, or in groups to practice math skills. For many students, math games are one of their favorite centers! There are numerous benefits to these games. Besides simply practicing math skills, games also help excite students about learning math and they increase the students' confidence. One of my favorite reasons to use math games in my classroom is the interaction that happens between peers. Students help each other, learn to take turns, practice conflict resolution techniques (rock, paper, scissors is our favorite!), and they even learn that it's okay to lose! These math games will help increase engagement, boost math confidence, and encourage positive peer interactions. My students love the variety of teacher created games I have offered them, and I know they'd love the opportunity to play some new math games!
