My students come to school with a lot of burdens. The neighborhood can be treacherous. However, almost all of my students are enthusiastic about science. There is something magical about science class that is transformative. I teach at a catchment area charter school in North Philadelphia. All of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. The school's mission is to use a focused, progressive educational approach designed specifically to close the achievement gap for low-income students who come to us severely under-prepared.
