Many of the students in this school district are unable to purchase the materials that would benefit their educational growth. Purchasing normal, everyday school supplies creates an unbearable financial hardship on the families. Having the everyday, normal school supplies and materials ready for them in the classroom would remove that barrier and will allow the students to participate in a "hands-on" approach to learning math skills. Each day, the math lesson is opened up with an activity that engages the students. These activities vary in structure to include whole group, small group, pairs, and individual sessions. At times, the skills are reinforced through variations of familiar games like Bingo or Go Fish, for example, where students are familiar with the rules of the game but must apply the math skill focus for the week to the daily reinforcement activity. The format is not always a game; but, it does always includes hands-on activities with a reflective conversation between students. Following the engagement activity, students return to whole group instruction followed by independent practice of the skill for the day or to learn a new math concept. After a time of reflection of the day's activities, a Real-World Application is presented to the students that utilizes, and again reinforces, the newly learned math skill and how it applies to real life. While the whole group instruction and independent practice rely on a student workbook, both the Engagement and Real-World Applications components rely heavily on normal, everyday school supplies. I have utilized this program for one year and have already seen an 88% improvement in growth of the students' state assessment performances for one grade level. Again, having access to these important everyday tools would greatly benefit the continued progress of these students in the grades of 5 through 8. Thank you.
