What seven or eight year old doesn't love the chance to make their own choice, without any input from an adult? It gives them a sense of new found independence, trust, and most importantly, happiness. Flexible seating will allow my second grade students to independently choose their own learning environment that ensures academic engagement, confidence and success for all subjects. Not only does it provide them with a personalized learning setting, but it lends itself to collaborative conversations and experiences with their peers. My students will no longer be hindered by shouting across large desks to their partners or teammates, they can simply grab their new seating choice and form a close circle, where all can be seen and heard. I am teaching children of the 21st century who, as adults, won't be required to sit at a desk all day if it hinders their career success. The products I have selected will give my students an early opportunity to partake in a seating choice that many adults in the workplace have today. The wobble stools, bouncy band chairs, and rockers will allow my second graders to get the wiggles out while focusing on the tasks at hand. The sit spots will be used to mark our meeting place at the beginning of each day and lesson. They can also be moved around the classroom if the students would like to designate their own spot. All of the resources will benefit each student by giving them the opportunity to choose a seating option that can ensure academic engagement and achievement.
