Students don't read for a variety of reasons. While some students find reading boring or time-consuming, other students simply do not have a comfortable space to read. As a first year teacher in an urban school with a diverse population, I don't have all the resources I need to help my students feel successful in our shared space. I truly believe reading saves lives, and I want my students to see themselves as readers and authors. A classroom should be a space that promotes literacy. A couple of days ago, I asked my students to design their ideal reading space. Their drawings do not look like my classroom -- students included couches and bean bags in their environment. I would love to provide my students with that space by purchasing a set of bean bags, a rug, and some more books. Currently, I've invested my own money into a small library for my students, but I need your help to give my students everything they need to become successful readers!
