Math is a big struggle for my students. I see COVID-19 as a major factor in this. The students were out of the classroom for a long period of time. Once we were able to go back into the classroom, there were still problems with students being quarantined. Missing all of that instruction time has left a lot of gaps in their learning. Some of my sixth-grade students are having a tough time remembering how to multiply and divide. It is difficult to build their knowledge of 6th-grade math concepts when they are missing the fundamentals of math. I want my students to find fun in math. To do that, I need to get them out of the mindset that "math is hard". I have requested hands-on manipulatives and anchor charts to give my students help understanding concepts. I make many manipulatives and visuals as well. The laminating machine will help those last longer. Dry-erase boards make for an easy assessment tool. They quickly allow me to see what my students know and what they are struggling with, so I can address misunderstandings immediately. Students learn more when fun is involved. The "Eggspert" uses my student's competitive nature. "Be the first to buzz in and answer the question." The "Eggspert" helps turn all the school subjects into a game. Lastly, the mail center will help my students keep their supplies organized in one spot. I love math. I just need some tools to help my students learn to love math as well.
