A carpet big enough for all students to sit on will make a huge impact on our classroom community. Currently, many students are sitting directly on the classroom floor, which they don't enjoy, thus hindering their motivation to sit on the floor with the class. We need a place where we can all sit together comfortably and where everyone can fit. We follow a Responsive Classroom approach, where greeting one another and sharing our thoughts and feelings on the carpet are part of our daily routine. Having a carpet large enough for all students to sit comfortably and feel a part of the circle is critical to this approach and will provide an inviting community meeting space for the class. We also sit together as a whole class on the carpet during whole group reading, writing, and science lessons. It's critical for students to have a comfortable place to sit so that they are focused on the lesson at hand. We also offer the opportunity for students to choose their independent work spaces, and many students enjoy working on the floor to read and sit with a partner. Having a clean, comfortable place for students to work will greatly impact their stamina and enjoyment of being in their workspace.
