Many students in my district live below the poverty level and have little or no educational support when they get home from school because their parents are at work. My school has a large ELL population. The ELL students, along with 4th grade students in general, have difficulty writing strong pieces of writing that convey their ideas in a way that interests the reader. Exposing students to different pieces of literature that demonstrate various traits found in good writing will help my students improve their writing. The 4th grade students are also required to take a rigorous NYS Common Core exam in English Language Arts. The exams require the students to write several pieces of writing while being timed. Building my students ability and confidence will help them conquer the challenge of writing about several topics on the timed parts of the exams. When students become confident writers, they beam with pride when working on their final draft of a writing piece.
