As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide them with the opportunity to take control of their own learning and make an impact on their school community. My students are creative, passionate and very eager to make a difference. They often feel their voices are ignored and their ability to recognize and solve problems is overlooked. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and all of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly help them control their experiences at school. By doing this in a creative and positive way that stresses personal responsibility, I hope to inspire them to become the agents of change their school and community so desperately need.
