Beyond movies and stereotypes, most Americans do not have an understanding of the everyday life of an average Chinese person, or how the two cultures are different. By engaging in these activities, my students can appreciate how Chinese celebrate holidays differently, and gain a greater understanding of the Chinese writing system through the art of calligraphy. This project will help to provide practical experiences in different cultural activities that focus on typical activities a Chinese student encounter. American students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand the difficulty and artistry involved in traditional calligraphy as both an art form and as a means for learning the Chinese language. Classroom activities will use the calligraphy ink, brushes, and paper to craft traditional symbols that the students can keep as a memento. Also, the sky lanterns will be used to demonstrate how traditional holidays are celebrated in China.
