My school is a public school serving about 350 K-8 students on Chicago's North side. The school is composed of 98% African American and 2% Hispanic students of which 100% of the students qualify for federal free lunch support (the standard measure of poverty at our school). My students are remarkable young people. Although they come from a high poverty neighborhood with all sorts of obstacles to overcome, they are strong, resilient and eager to learn.
