Reading is essential to creating lifelong learners. Students who love to read will explore unknown worlds, make fantastic discoveries, learn all about the world outside their own little bubbles, expand their perspectives and learn to empathize with others. Most of my students will never venture more than 100 miles away from home, except in a book. Reading is their gateway to the outside world. My classroom library is very outdated. Many of the books I have, my students do not find interesting. I’m hoping to stock my shelves with updated books, reimagined classics, graphic novels, historical fiction, and more. Interested learners become self-motivated learners, and that’s the kind of learners I hope to inspire. Who knows? All it might take is one great book to spark a lifetime of learning.
