Students deserve to have choice and options that reflect their learning style. Not every student learns best in the traditional desk and chair setup. As adults, we know what works best for us when we need to be focused and productive, and 3rd graders do too. Research supports that flexible seating helps students use up excess energy, increase motivation and engagement, and create a better oxygen flow to the brain! Not only does that give the student choice, it is also promoting a better learning environment. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. In a paper written by Matthew T. Mahar, et al finds that simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially. What better way to promote increased academic performance, reduced behavior issues, and better overall health than to have flexible seating options within the classroom.
