My students attend a school where they are considered intellectually disabled in Wisconsin. On a daily basis, my students struggle with simple reading and writing tasks that not only affects their educational success, but also affects their journey through life. Even though my students experience difficulties daily, they are driven to become productive community members. When asked to read, most of them can be found sounding out every sound in each word. Reading a word is difficult for my students, reading a book sometimes seems impossible. My students learn most successfully when their instruction is both multi-sensory and hands-on. They need to experience reading concepts in an auditory, visual, physical, and movement driven way. Even though they face many obstacles each and every day, my students are always motivated to keep learning. As their teacher, it is my goal to keep them motivated and learning constantly!
