My kindergartners love to express their ideas, however, this can be a challenge for many of them. This is especially true at the beginning of the school year because they have not yet developed their writings skills. While we do a lot of "writing " at the beginning of the year, it is often difficult for the teacher and other students to understand what is being expressed. However, everyone can understand what is being expressed when it comes to art. With the addition of the Kwik Stix to my classroom, students would have one more medium to choose from when finishing their art projects. One project we do several times a month is called a direct draw. For this task, I give step by step directions for drawing a picture. I describe what type of line we are going to draw, where to start it, and how to end it. I give both verbal and visual directions. When we are done, each child has a portrait of something that aligns to our curriculum. We draw everything from Johnny Appleseed to George Washington to a beautiful sunflower. To finish the portrait, the students use either crayons, markers, or watercolors to add color. I would love to offer my students the option of using tempera paints, however, the traditional paint can be very messy and is time consuming to get out and put away. The Kwik Stix would make painting fun and easy to clean up. Once students have finished their drawing, they copy or write a sentence about their drawing. The students love to display these drawings in the hallway and I always enjoy telling my students about the kind comments other teachers and students make about their drawings.
