My students are in middle school in an area with a reputation for violence. They're at a tough age, and they live in tough neighborhoods. Most students in my class come from households whose incomes place them well below the poverty line. Nevertheless, they've chosen to rise above the apathy, antagonism, and excuses that typify their peers. Instead, they respond to adversity with sharp wit and an inspiring resolve to improve their neighborhood. My classroom is unique, as it is a multi-subject seventh grade class. There are aspiring programmers, lawyers, authors, scientists, actors, and historians. Each student demonstrates a sense of ownership in the class whether it is revising essays or math peer tutoring. They're eager to research their own interests and are always looking for great novels to escape into. My students collectively represent 11 different countries, which builds a rich discussion base when studying world history or literature. Working with them is truly a privilege!
