My students frequently make requests for titles they are interested in reading for independent reading. These books often include non-fiction sports books and new/popular titles. They enjoy newly released books by favorite authors and popular series. They are eager to read these books and will be motivated by the new titles in our classroom library. Having a large, high interest library, will increase motivation to read which will not only help reading skills, but will also help develop students in all areas. My 6th, 7th and 8th grade students have varying interests and reading levels. Having texts of various levels and topics will help foster a love of reading in my students. These books will inspire my reluctant readers because of their high level of interest. They will be used to help students learn about different cultures and circumstances outside their own personal experiences. Books by diverse authors such as Jason Reynolds, Nic Stone and Eirka L. Sanchez will be read by many students. They will respond to their reading in writing and share their thoughts with classmates. Books like these will spark discussions about our world and expand students' perspectives of what it means to be a human being. Reading different points of view will increase their understanding of the world. Students will use these books to read in class, take home, discuss and share. These are books my students have been asking for! They will recommend these books to one another and enhance their reading lives!
