How do you create a good citizen? You give them the tools they need through knowledge, engagement, and empowerment! Scholastic News provides interesting articles about current events in local communities and around the world! The format is interactive and engaging. After reading an article about a young girl helping Rescue Animals in her local community, my students organized a school-wide fundraiser to collect food, towels, cleaning supplies, and other materials needed for the shelter. My students are NOT just passive readers! Scholastic News provides vivid video snips, topics for weekly journal writing, vocabulary enrichment, and controversial questions for whole classroom debates.
