Having a safe, calm , quiet place to regroup is essential to my students academic success. Middle school can be a stressful environment for any child, especially so for the students I teach. It is very common for my kids to become overwhelmed within a typical classroom environment and respond with a disruptive outburst. Just having the option to move to a separate quiet place for a few minutes can, and does, make a world of difference in their ability to participate in the classroom with their peers. That is why the items that I am asking for help funding are essential to my classroom. The bean bag chairs will be much more comfortable than a standard desk and the rug and the lamp will complete their safe space by cutting down on the harsh overhead lights and give them a place where they can just relax for a few minutes. Just these few items can make a huge impact on the length of a meltdown and therefore gets them back into the classroom with their peers in a good frame of mind to be not only successful, but happy as well. Having this space will be instrumental in helping my kids to have a successful school year.
