We are always running out of pencils and erasers in class. Many of my students are now out of notebook paper because they have filled their journal with instructional notes to refer back to later, when working independently. For example, when a student can not remember what a suffix is they are encouraged to look back at their notebook to locate the resource we developed together when initially taught. Students also use their notebooks to expand upon their ideas and writing prompts given to them through readings and classroom discussions.
My students also work in groups to bounce ideas off each other and to learn how to productively work with others to display their ideas in creative ways. Many of them choose to make posters, but I want to make a variety of supplies available to them in order for them to make it unique. Student projects are based upon readings and research they have conducted. Students are required to present information to the class to improve upon their public speaking and expression.
In math, we use dry erase boards and dry erase markers for quick checks of understanding after a lesson is taught. Students also use their dry erase boards while at stations to help them solve math problems without wasting several sheets of paper.
