Although I have new students every year, my students are standard level math students who range from average abilities to those who find math challenging. These include students with IEP's and 504 plans. They need that little extra push and confidence to show that they can master math and learn to enjoy it along the way. I find my first job is showing them that math is not "scary" and that they can learn the concepts through games, practice, challenges, technology and more. As we all know or can remember, middle school, especially 6th grade, can be daunting. I try to make my classroom as comfortable and inviting as possible. Instead of being "put out" for bad behavior, I want them to have a safe space in my room to relax or "cool down" if they feel overwhelmed. I want them to feel good about themselves and to help them find their inner mathematician. With your support, this can become a reality.
