My students need to learn that school is a safe and welcoming environment so they can build the confidence they need to become better at learning (simply by trying and practicing). They need materials that can go home with them so they have a way to practice their learning at home. They need options in sitting and working so they determine which way works best for them and can be in charge of their own educational future.
As a new teacher, I am still building the supplies I need to carry with me from year-to-year. Some of the items in my list are basic office supplies like the dry erase markers and boards and the storage bins that will help my students be able to practice skills and work with materials in the room, but they also support the teaching I'm doing each day. The leveled books will be useful in offering more reading choices to students so that they can take these home and practice reading with them each day. The different types of sensory toys and sitting options allow for students to learn where they work best and to support many kindergarten students who enter the classroom unable to control their bodily movements but still eager to learn. These chairs, wobbly cushions and balls will help students gain control of their own movements and commit to doing their work.
