In kindergarten, students spend a good part of the day at carpet time. This is an opportunity to gather students for a story, calendar time, and partner or small group discussion. The classroom carpet brings students together in a smaller area and helps them to focus on a specific activity. With an ABC classroom carpet, students can quickly find a space during whole group time. I can also enforce letter recognition by asking them to sit on a specific letter, or ask which letter they are on. At various times of the day, when students are not gathered at the carpet, it is also a helpful visual for practicing the alphabet.
