Many of my students have a learning disability or other disabilities that prevents them from learning in a typical way. I have found that I can reach them quickly and make strides by introducing them to books. Many of them have only opened up and started talking when I ask them to read a story with me. Others have gained valuable social skills through peer reading and others simply enjoy having books to read. Having books accessible to these students is key as it may be their only chance to read a book or have someone to read with. More than half of my class has very little exposure to culture and we have been struggling with ways to promote exposure to culture with a group of preschoolers in a way they will understand. Books provide a much-needed learning experience and exposure to culture. Having these materials will open a world of literacy skills, social development, speech skills and set them on the path to academic success.
