I teach at a Title I school, in which the majority of my students are from low-income families. Unfortunately, not many of our families place a big importance on reading at home. Our school has a very small library in which students can check out books and take home. But if nobody is reading the books to them, then they never get the chance to hear what real reading sounds like! My young students are in the very beginning stages of learning to read. Learning to be expressive readers who read fluently is best taught by listening to reading. Especially when kids can listen to books that they find interesting.
