My school is surrounded by affluent areas but right on the outskirts of town there are a lot of HUGE apartment complexes where parents are working two and three jobs to just get by. The kids from those apartments are zoned for a great schools but unfortunately not afforded a lot of the same privileges their counterparts have.
One of the biggest things I see holding these students behind is a lack of current technology. We have computer labs but they are old and used for our high stakes testing. I have a lot of ESE students who could really benefits from proprietary Apple apps specifically designed to help them with social cues, organization, science, and reading. This lack of technology is frustrating to these students and really holding them back from their full potential. I want my students to get a fair shake and feel like if they do work hard they can achieve their dreams no matter what their socioeconomic background is.
