The students at my school are almost 100% free and reduced lunch which means they come from an income bracket qualifying them for public assistance. Our school was built for 500 students, but we accommodate about 900. We no longer go on field trips, and even playground space is at a premium. The neighborhood in which you would find our school is one of the highest crime areas in the city, rife with gang activity, prostitution, and other illegal activities. Stray animals share the roadside and though I'd like to say the sidewalks, there aren't very many of those in the neighborhood either. This is the environment my students see everyday. This is what their normal is. This is why it is so important to me to expose them to the world outside of what they see everyday in the hopes that it will help motivate them to work hard and want to explore- to be part of the world outside their immediate environment.
