My students live in rural community in North Carolina. Our school is mid to high poverty level but filled with tremendously caring community that would do anything for their students. My students are intelligent and have found the joy in learning. In our classroom, my second grade students gather on our carpet area to discuss new topics, engage in story time, and express our feeling about how the day went. When it's time to apply what they have learned independently, students go to their desk to complete assignments. Each student follows a rotation schedule during Math and Reading. Then, the carpet area is a station to get comfortable and enjoy reading independently or engage in math games with a partner. This carpet area or rug is the core to our classroom.
