This year in Language Arts 8, we are jumping into the grand experiment of flexible seating. Last year, I was intrigued by the idea that students would be more invested in learning if they were comfortable; meaning, that they weren't forced to sit in the same position, in the same type of chair, for up to 6 hours of their day. A colleague of mine piloted the idea and had outstanding results. Her students were excited, as well as relieved, to have a more comfortable, almost home like environment in which to study and learn. When I am reading or working on a complex task, I need to be comfortable; why wouldn't I assume that my students have the same need? I want my students to have the opportunity this year to pick a seating type that helps them learn best. For some, that means the gentle bouncing of a yoga ball to dissipate their energy as they complete an assignment. For others, it means needing to stretch out on a bean bag to cozy into their reading. For many it's being able to sit in a comfortable chair using a TV tray as their desk. Students also have different learning needs--some need to be able to physically move in order to concentrate--which the yoga ball and office chairs allow. Others, with sensory needs, learn best from sitting closer to the floor in a bean bag chair. Please help our class access learning to their fullest potential--becoming critical readers and thinkers, growing into effective and creative writers, engaging in thoughtful discussion, and listening intently to each other's fantastic ideas all while being comfortable! We need bean bag chairs, office chairs, a variety of writing surfaces and balance ball chairs to give students options they need to learn best.
