In our district of 21 elementary schools, there are only 6 AK (Alternative Kindergarten) classrooms. My students come from different neighborhoods and diverse backgrounds. They must qualify for AK in the area of math, reading, social/emotional/behavior skills, or any combination of these. While some may be ready to start reading, others may not know the difference between a letter and a number. We learn all the basics of how to go to school (think: how to sit at tables and on the carpet, how to line up and walk in the hall, how to appropriately get attention from peers and adults, etc!) We also focus on kindergarten academic skills, though at a much slower pace. We learn to read familiar words, write stories, and solve basic addition problems. Most importantly, we learn that school is a fun, safe place where kindness counts and everyone's voice matters!
