I am a behaviorist who has been working with students with social, emotional and behavioral difficulties for 14 years. My students require ongoing support throughout their day to regulate their emotions. In addition to being in a substantially separate classroom, they have time out rooms they can utilize to settle themselves. The tent and bean bags will be a comfortable, welcoming space for my students to go to manage their emotions and actions instead of utilizing the time out room. The radio and music cds will create a calming atmosphere while they use the putty and other sensory tools to de-escalate. My hope is that the "Zen Den" would be a setting the students will want to utilize prior to escalating as a healthy strategy to regulate their emotions.
