Broke but Brilliant! I teach a wonderful group of third graders in a very rural community. Our school has a very high population of low socio-economic students. Our community has recently suffered the closing down of many of the factories and work places that employed so many of our community members. The result has been a high number of parents returning to school themselves. We are also seeing a growing number of English Language learners in our school, another reason to focus on extending literacy into the home and families. The whole goal of this project is to allow students a way to extend classroom concepts to the home and allow parents a way to support their children and even create learning experiences for themselves. Parent involvement has shown to increase success and achievement in the classroom. This project would allow us to target those students and parents who may not have the resources available.
