My school is an awesome elementary school in a low socioeconomic neighborhood. Parents want their students to succeed, but have little ability to help them along the journey due to language barriers, financial strife, and time constraints with working multiple jobs. Half of my students are language learners from a variety of backgrounds. They need lots of language development still, especially in understanding what is being said in text. Often times they can decode the text, but not unlock what it is saying due to lack of exposure to figurative language instruction and meaningful discussions.
