I teach 16-18-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual abilities at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School. My students focus on reading and writing at a college level in American Literature and African American Literature class. My focus is to prepare them for any post-secondary opportunity they choose. Our goals in the class are to effectively analyze complex texts, complete at least three 5-page analytical papers about various topics, and effectively navigate through the college admissions process. My students love to read stories about students who mirror their image, but also their experiences. We also enjoy the movie adaptations of books. In class, we build a family that we can rely on academically, but also emotionally. We are a part of a larger family that is our school. I hold all of my students to high expectations, and I accept nothing less than their best because they can do it!
