I work with a combination class consisting of 1st and 2nd graders in a public school in a very low socioeconomic area. Many of my students come from single parent families where parents just don't make time to read with their children-for many reasons. I have been able to help two parents begin their journey of learning to read. All of my students come to school each day with a smile and they really want to learn. They are like sponges soaking in everything I can teach them. I have just introduced them to a more complex read-aloud text, "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane", and they sit with their mouths open and eyes staring at me waiting for the next adventure in Edward's life. They love to read independently (even if they can only read the pictures) but they want exciting books they can learn from. They're thrilled to see bright, colored pictures and animals and things about our Earth. They just need the resources in their classroom
