AP English Language and Composition cultivates the reading and writing skills that students need for college success and for intellectually responsible civic engagement. Research indicates that the best way for students to improve their reading skills is to engage often in independent reading for extended periods of time. By reading classic and contemporary works of literature and literary nonfiction—representative of a variety of periods, cultures, and world-views—students can learn to appreciate divergent cultures that represent the diverse perspectives they will encounter in twenty-first- century classrooms and workplaces. Rebecca Skloot's novel examines the ethical issues of race and class in medical research. Students will be afforded an opportunity to develop and defend claims on the author's use of rhetorical strategies and style choices.
