Who doesn't love to build with Legos? And how magical are magnets? With the addition of materials to my classroom, my students will be taking learning to a higher level. All of my kiddos love playing with Duplos (large Lego blocks), building and creating. Now it's time to take the learning deeper by guiding them to create structures that use motion, measurement and problem solving. The STEAM PARK set and the Magna-Tiles set will both create opportunities to think more deeply about our creations while offering opportunities to share and collaborate. Students will be guided to consider the concepts of cause and effect and making observations. Their language and imaginative abilities will be stimulated as they are asked to discuss and describe what they are building. Most of my students enjoy playing in the dramatic play kitchen area. Including the Duplo CAFE set will help make the learning more meaningful and varied by including topics related to various math concepts such as sorting, counting, matching and patterning. The set also includes some materials that stimulate early reading skills. And just like the science sets mentioned above, these materials will stimulate collaboration, language development and using imagination to explore every day life situations. My Specials Needs English learners and typically developing students will all benefit from using these materials. I, too, will benefit! I will learn how to teach scientific concepts. Curiosity, exploration, imagination and investigation will provide opportunities to expand important skills such as being able to focus and be engaged for longer periods of time. And best of all, this is accomplished in fun, entertaining hands-on experiences.
