Flexible seating will help engage my students in several beneficial ways. Flex seating offers choice, and all students feel empowered by having some degree of it, thus some control over their environment. Children also have the innate need to move. Flex seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, or lean, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. This burns more calories and increases metabolism, and helps keep young minds focused and alert. Flex seating also increases comfort, and if you are an educator, you know that an uncomfortable student is a distracted and unproductive student. Flex seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive. It also stimulates students' sense of touch, which is great for processing information. Sensory input is constructive for young students and students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD. Lastly, flex seating is just plain fun! My goal is for students to thrive in a productive and inclusive environment, and flexible seating will do just that!
