My 135 ESL students are grades 9th, 10th, and 11th. I have refugee and immigrant students, many with interrupted school experiences. My schedule has 90 minutes of daily reading that includes 75 minutes of small group instruction, 90 minutes in each of two sessions of foundational science, and 45 minutes of math with a wide spectrum of ability levels in English. The informal quick checks each week show growth in necessary English language acquisition skills. My students are at the ELL high school site for the district with almost 300 ELL in the building. My school is one of five high schools, but with an aviation magnet program offered. There are frequent enrollment changes throughout the year of students coming and going. I work collaboratively across the spectrum of courses in math, science, and government and teacher strengths to help all students find successes.
