I have 25 students that range in academic, social, and socioeconomic status. More importantly, these children are the kindest and most hard working students that I have ever met. They always want to improve themselves and they always touch my heart every day. There are over 50% of our students on "free and reduced lunch" which qualifies us for Title 1 status. They attend a school of about 546 students at a K-5 elementary school. I am teaching 2nd grade for the first time at this particular school and realize that there is a huge gap when it comes to reading, writing, and spelling at this grade level. The class came up with an idea to make a newspaper that is published monthly. I have students reading at a kindergarten level through a 3rd grade level. As a result, differentiation is the key in such a diverse classroom environment.
