The application of reading skills can be taught through an engaging mentor text. Each mentor text selected demonstrates at least one reading skill. Figurative language, text structure, main idea, theme, inferring, story elements and point of view are all skills that need to be carried through a students literacy career. Each book selected provides a new story, a different genre, and interests readers of both non-fiction and fiction. For example, "Tricky Vic" is a book about a man who sold the Eiffel Tower. "Tricky Vic" by Greg Pizzoli helps students with chronological order with an emphasis on signal words used to let the reader know a new step is starting. The books chosen for theme include a variety of hardships and how to over come them. They teach morals that should be embedded within the classroom. A few extra books added include stories about the boats that helped during 9/11. We are officially teaching students the history of this catastrophic event in America.
