My students face a long, learning-packed day with 80-minute core classes. Some even spend an extra hour on the bus before and after school. I would like my students to have access to comfortable seating in order to be able to relax while working. Comfy chairs and lapboards are helpful when students have to use technology to complete assignments or extensive projects. Also, students with special needs can specifically benefit from flexible seating, since they have to sit without much movement for multiple periods at a time. To help my energetic 7th graders stretch their brain, they need to get their wiggles out somehow in order to maintain focus. We will use our classroom kidney table in conjunction with these new stools to allow student flexibility and promote active learning through movement. The kidney table is used for small groups and the movement will not distract other students and will give my students a strong peer-to-peer interaction. Yoga mats and lap desks are other alternatives that will give students a chance to move around while still completing their assignments. Flexible seating will play a key role in our student-centered middle school math classroom.
