This field trip is an exciting and educational way for my 8th grade students to cap off 3 years of learning in the areas of ecology and natural resource management and protection. My hope is that through real world experiences, habitat restoration efforts and ecosystem monitoring, students will gain an appreciation for and desire to protect the few natural, wild spaces left on our planet. My students have been involved in an intensive habitat restoration project near our school. This multi-year project aims to teach children about habitat conservation and invasive species removal. We have had guest presenters and hands-on work days aimed at learning ecological monitoring, invasive species removal and other restoration techniques. We then compare our highly impacted suburban forest plot of land to other protected and healthy ecosystems in Oregon. In this way, we are able to track our progress and success in our efforts to return this land to a more natural state.
