My students enter middle school with a desire to learn, but typically three grades behind due to language barriers. Most students' native language is not English. Students are entitled to three years of language support, then must make it in a mainstream classroom. Stimulating curiosity and helping to explore in order to learn, enables students to catch up without becoming disillusioned about learning. It is really tough to think all day in a different language than what you speak at home, and takes years of practice. Many students become disruptive or disengage from the school, but hands-on active learning can help students acquire skills, which increases their enjoyment of school while building confidence. 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. If I or other teachers do not provide students an opportunity to explore maps and globes, they will simply not be able to experience and explore the world. Who doesn't think maps and globes are interesting and engaging?
