Utilizing technology will never go away. Our students have never lived in a time without a cell phone, color television, or DVR. Many are unaware of what a VHS is. Mastering math facts and being able to quickly understand what is being asked of you is a lifelong skill. By working on computational fluency students will be able to quickly identify what is being asked of them. Using Lucy Calkins Units of Study for reading and writing is very rigorous for students as well as teachers. Students are expected to be able to research a topic and write about it with clarity. Each unit of study has a focus such as character traits, writing with details, doing research, writing about that research, and being able to present the final product. Students also read and write fractured fairytales in their final unit of the year. It is so necessary to put the appropriate tools in their hands!
