My students are in first grade in a rural public elementary school. Our school has a very high poverty rate. I usually have some children who need a little help and many that need a lot of help. About 1/4-1/3 of my students receive services through our special education department. Even with the challenges they face such as poverty, disabilities, and poor parenting situations, they want to be at school and they want to learn. Despite some needing extra time and effort to learn, my students are happy to see me every day and eager to master skills. My classroom is a second chance for many of them and I feel that they know it is a special place for learning.
